Raymonda Act III Performance Review
At His Majesty?s Theatre in Perth, the West Australian Ballet's presentation of Raymonda [Act III] Pas Classique Hongrois, choreographed by Javier Torres, offers a traditional yet engaging experience. This adaptation retains the original ballet structure while incorporating variations from other acts and converting some solos to duets and trios, allowing more dancers to shine. The performance showcased the contrasting styles of principals Kiki Saito and Oscar Valdes; Saito's graceful and delicate movements complemented Valdes's confident and bold presence. While their performance was enjoyable, it lacked a deeper emotional connection. The clean and minimalist set, featuring a chandelier, along with elegant costumes designed by Erika Turunen, effectively set the stage for the piece. While the choreography was technically proficient, a stronger emotional portrayal would have enhanced the overall impact. Raymonda Act III serves as a celebration of classical ballet, providing a delightful experience, though it may fall short of leaving a lasting impression due to its conservative approach.
